DIY Sessions

Gathering together with new and old friends to be creative is a fun way to connect! A unique aspect of the Grateful Girl Gathering is our DIY sessions.

These breakout sessions are presented by creative leaders in their field and offer our attendees a fun time of learning something new and fellowshipping with fellow attendees.

Each attendee can choose one DIY session that interests them when they register for the conference. (Tip: Register early to make sure you get your first choice, but no worries if you don’t! They are all great!)

Stay tuned for the Concord and Spruce Pine locations DIY Session info!

Exodus Roller

Presenter: Kendall Chandler, The Quill and Honey

In our DIY session, we will be creating an Exodus Roller. During our time together we will talk about the holy anointing oils from Exodus chapter 30, and see the beautiful connections of the Old and New Testaments while making this perfume roller together.

About Kendall: The beginnings of my business came when I was a young mother, wife and schoolteacher feeling frustrated to find budget-friendly natural products that were safe, effective and aesthetically pleasing for my family. I purchased an essential oils kit and made it my mission to know how to replace every product in my home with something I could make myself. I began teaching classes in person and online, working to help other women do the same. Eventually, I had friends and family asking to purchase my homemade goods rather than make their own, and The Quill and Honey was born!

Throughout those years, I just felt that the Lord had placed a drive in my soul for something I couldn’t see yet. So I just kept making, kept learning, kept digging, kept dreaming.

In 2022, Brian and I made the decision that I would resign from my teaching position and pursue The Quill and Honey full time. We had no idea what was in store, but trusted God to direct our steps. What He orchestrated for us was MORE than we could have imagined, and on August 1, 2022 we moved into 18 S Main Street in Mars Hill, NC.

It’s more than I could have dreamed and I can’t believe this is my life! Ephesians 3:21-21 says it best:

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory!

Painted Journal Covers with Hand-Lettered Inspiration

Presenter: Carley Roark

Join us for a creative and meaningful craft session where we’ll transform blank journal covers into beautiful, personalized keepsakes. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to paint delicate floral designs using simple, beginner-friendly techniques—perfect for both first-timers and seasoned creatives. Then, we’ll explore the art of hand lettering as you choose an inspirational word, phrase, or Bible verse—such as Devotional, Prayer Journal, or Bible Notes—to feature at the center of your design.

Come ready to paint, letter, and leave with a journal that’s as unique as your spiritual journey.

About Carley — Hi, I’m Carley! I’m so excited to create with you during this special time together. I’m the K–2 art teacher for Mitchell County Schools, where I have the joy of helping young students express themselves through creativity every day. Outside the classroom, I love hand lettering and painting, especially pieces that blend florals with Scripture or words of encouragement.

My love for florals runs deep—it’s something passed down through generations of women in my family. My great-grandmother’s garden seems to always be blooming, and both my mom and grandma have a beautiful gift for floral design. Their creativity continues to inspire the way I approach art and teaching.

Sharing God’s Word through art is one of my favorite ways to blend faith and creativity. I truly believe that creating can be a form of worship—a way to reflect on truth and encourage others. One verse that is especially dear to me is Matthew 5:16:

Custom Painted Faith Hat

Presenter: Deanna Woody, The Bougie Brush

This one-of-a-kind wide-brim hat was designed with love and purpose for the Grateful Girl event. Featuring a laser-burned floral design and the powerful reminder “Beauty for Ashes,” each hat is a blank canvas waiting to be brought to life by you.

Attendees will paint their own hat on-site — a wearable symbol of renewal, faith, and personal expression. No two will be alike, and every finished piece will carry its own testimony home.

About Deanna: — a proud mom, wife, and grandma who’s living a life I truly love. After nearly two decades in corporate America, I took a leap of faith to pursue something closer to my heart: building a space that brings people joy, encourages self-expression, and strengthens our amazing community.

The Bougie Brush is a true reflection of who I am — a little extra, a little fun, and always fabulous on a budget. The name says it all: I love nice things, but I’m all about making joy and creativity accessible for everyone.

Here, it’s not just about art — it’s about connection, laughter, and creating something meaningful together.
